Meta Internship to Full-Time: What It Actually Takes

Meta's internship program is designed to feel like a real job, because it is one. You'll ship production code, go through code reviews with full-time engineers, and get evaluated against the same bar as an entry-level hire. The company is not testing whether you can learn. It's testing whether you can perform.
Between 50% and 75% of Meta interns receive return offers. The range is wide because it shifts with hiring conditions, team headcount, and the strength of each cohort. What doesn't change is the evaluation framework: you're measured against the E3 (entry-level engineer) bar, and the decision is made in a formal calibration during weeks 10 and 11 of your internship.
How the 12 weeks break down
Meta structures the internship in distinct phases. Understanding the timeline tells you where to focus your energy.
Weeks 1 through 3: Onboarding. You meet your team, get access to the codebase, set up your development environment, and start ramping up on your project. The evaluation hasn't started in earnest, but your manager and peers are already forming impressions. The intern who asks clear questions about the codebase in week one reads differently from the intern who stays quiet and appears confused in week three.
Weeks 4 through 6: Mid-cycle review. This is your first formal feedback checkpoint. Your intern manager (IM) will share where you stand relative to the E3 bar. Pay close attention. If the feedback is "you're on track," that usually means you're meeting expectations but haven't separated yourself yet. If the feedback identifies specific gaps, you have four weeks to close them. Treat this review as a roadmap, not a grade.
Weeks 7 through 10: The evaluation window. This is where the return offer is won or lost. Your manager is collecting evidence for the calibration. Your peer reviewers are being asked for input. Everything you ship, every code review you handle, every conversation you have with the team is data. This is not the time to coast.
Weeks 11 and 12: Non-evaluative. The calibration decision is made in weeks 10 and 11. Weeks 11 and 12 are treated as a relaxation period, at least for evaluation purposes. Your behavior during these weeks doesn't affect your return offer, but it does affect how the team remembers you. Wrapping up documentation, writing a clean handoff doc, and thanking people who helped you costs nothing and leaves a strong final impression.
The calibration system
Meta doesn't just have your manager decide in isolation. The return offer goes through a calibration process where your IM presents your performance alongside other interns on the team or in the org.
Interns who receive offers are rated on a tier system:
MA (Meets All Expectations). You performed at the E3 bar. You shipped work, took feedback, and functioned as a contributing member of the team. About 70% of interns who get return offers fall into this category. This is the standard "yes, we'd hire this person."
EE (Exceeds Expectations). You performed above the E3 bar. You shipped more than expected, showed strong engineering judgment, or had outsized impact relative to the project scope. About 25% of successful interns get this rating. An EE rating may come with a stronger offer or preferred team placement.
Rockstar. You performed near an E4 (mid-level engineer) level. This is rare, about 5% of return-offer interns. You identified problems nobody asked you to find, shipped work that changed how the team operates, or demonstrated technical depth that surprised the full-time engineers around you.
The interns who don't receive return offers typically fell below the MA bar. The most common reason: they couldn't ship production-quality code fast enough with reasonable independence. The second most common: communication gaps that made their manager unable to build a strong case during calibration. The core skills that convert any internship into a full-time offer apply here, but Meta's calibration system makes the evidence bar more explicit.
What Meta evaluates differently than other companies
Every big tech company evaluates interns on code quality, communication, and teamwork. Meta has a few specific emphases worth understanding.
Speed of ramp-up. Meta expects interns to start contributing real code quickly. The onboarding period is three weeks, not six. If you're still getting your dev environment working in week four, you're behind. Some of this is luck (some codebases are harder to ramp up on), but the expectation is set. Ask your manager what a realistic first-commit timeline looks like for your project.
Code review quality, both giving and receiving. Your peer reviewers will submit feedback as part of your evaluation. They're watching whether you respond to code review comments constructively, whether you make the same mistakes twice, and whether you can review other people's code thoughtfully. At Meta, code review is not just a quality gate. It's a signal about how you'll function as a teammate.
Shipping, not planning. Meta culture values shipping over architecting. An intern who ships three small, working features beats an intern who designs one ambitious system and doesn't finish it. If your project is large, talk to your IM about scoping it into smaller deliverables. Get something merged and running early. Then build on it.
The common failure modes
Not calibrating on the E3 bar early enough. The E3 bar is specific: it describes the level of code quality, engineering judgment, and independence expected of a first-year full-time engineer. If you don't know what that bar looks like for your team, ask in your first week. "What does an E3 engineer on this team do day-to-day?" is the right question. The answer gives you your evaluation criteria.
Treating peer reviewers as obstacles. Your peer reviewers are part of the evaluation. The intern who treats code review feedback as criticism to be defended is making an enemy of the process. The intern who treats feedback as coaching is making advocates. Say "thank you" first. Ask clarifying questions second. Push back only when you have a strong technical reason, and do it respectfully.
Going quiet between milestones. Your IM has a full-time job on top of managing you. They're not going to chase you for updates. If you go quiet for a week, they notice, and the story they tell themselves about why you went quiet is almost never flattering. Send a brief weekly update: what you shipped, what you're working on, where you need help. Three sentences. Do it every Friday.
Not using the mid-cycle review. Some interns hear "you're doing fine" at mid-cycle and relax. That's a mistake. "Fine" at mid-cycle puts you in the MA zone, which means you'll get an offer only if headcount is available. To move from MA to EE, you need the second half of the internship to be noticeably stronger than the first. Use the mid-cycle feedback as a springboard.
If you don't get the return offer
Meta doesn't have a cooling-off period for full-time applications. If you don't receive a return offer, you can apply for full-time positions immediately. This is unusual among big tech companies and worth knowing.
If the "no" was about performance, use the feedback to target specific gaps before you interview again. If the "no" was about headcount, ask your IM to refer you to teams that are hiring. A referral from a Meta manager who supervised your internship carries weight, even if that manager couldn't offer you a spot on their own team.
Either way, the 12 weeks you spent at Meta gave you production experience, code review patterns, and a network of engineers who know your work. That's worth more than most new grads have when they start interviewing. If you do get the return offer, understanding how to negotiate it can make a meaningful difference in your starting package. Document what you shipped, get your references lined up, and start the next chapter knowing you've already operated at a bar most candidates haven't touched.
